(***Flawless) Self Tanner Application

Wedding season is upon us. That means weekends full of showers, bachelorette parties and the big event itself. Also, the time to bring your winter legs out of hiding. So let’s break out the self tanner.

I know that many women have a fear of self tanning. Don’t! It is not a difficult process, and with the right tools and technique, you can get a flawless bronzed glow without setting foot on a beach. Or God forbid, in a tanning bed. Please don’t use a tanning bed.

I’ve done all the research and testing for you. And trust me, I have tried just about every product on the market over the last few years. Creams, gels, spays, mousse. Everything from prestige brands to drugstore lines. I’ve tried at least 20 of them and nixed all of the ones that are too orange, that stain, that streak. And they all have that awful telltale scent of self tanner.

But I have found the holy grail. And it is St Tropez Bronzing Mousse (you know, pronounced like “San Tro-pay”). Not orange. Not streaky. Best of all, no awful self tanner smell. It has a light, almost tropical scent when you apply it. Maybe a little bit of the self tanner smell a few hours later, but nothing compared to everything else. It’s a self tanning miracle. My best friend told me about this last year when I had an unfortunate incident with streaky tanner during a bachelorette weekend. She assured me that even though it was a bit pricey, it was totally worth it. She is correct. But no worries, they have small bottles available for $18 that will definitely get you through all of your spring and summer events. My big bottle lasted me through this past summer (used once a week or so) and is probably half way gone and still going strong. I love this stuff.

Steps to Apply a Flawless Tan at Home

  1. Gather your materials. (Bronzing mousse, application mitt, exfoliator, lightweight moisturizer)
  2. Exfoliate. The most crucial step. From experience, do not skip this. Your ankles and knees are a lot drier than you think. Give your skin a good scrub down in the shower before shaving.
  3. Moisturize. Immediately after showering, apply a lightweight moisturizer, making sure to apply a little extra around dry areas, like your ankles, knees, wrists and elbows. Apply a little over your eyebrows and around your hairline as well. Now wait about 15 or 20 minutes for it to really sink in and dry. I’ve found that if I apply tanner right after lotion, it has a little more slip and therefore, tends to rub off more easily.
  4. Tan. After your lotion has dried, it’s time to get glowing. Using a mitt to apply is clutch, because it gives you an even application. I just bought the cheaper one at Ulta and it has served me very well. Start from the top of your thigh/hip and work down to your toes, applying in long strokes to ensure everything is covered. This formula is tinted, so it’s easy to see if you’ve missed any spots.

    Helpful tips:
    • Use two pumps for your lower leg and two pumps for your thighs.Make sure you start from the top and move down, so you get your toes last. Too much can make you look like your feet are dirty, not tan.
    • Two pumps per arm should be enough.
    • One pump for your chest/d├ęcolletage area
    • Two or three pumps for your back. When applying on your back, flip the mitt around so that the product side is on the back of your hand. This is the easiest way  to get all the spots on your back. And it’s definitely helpful to use a mirror.
    • For your face, I recommend using just a basic wedge makeup sponge. Wet it a little and squeeze out the water about 10 times, then wrap in a paper towel and squeeze out any extra moisture. It helps to wet the sponge so it doesn't just soak up all the product.
    • Now apply the tanner to your face, being extra careful around your hairline and eyebrows (that little extra moisturizer there from step 3 should help prevent any weird lines there). Don’t forget your neck and ears
  5. Wait. This is the best part because it's only for one minute! Just 60 seconds and that’s it. You can get dressed after one minute! It dries really quickly and doesn’t stain sheets or clothing. Hooray!
  6. Rinse. After you’ve applied, avoid getting wet, showering or sweating. I like to do this at night after I’ve showered and after drying my hair…it gets hot in my bathroom and sometimes I get a little sweaty. Gross. Then I go to sleep and rinse off in the morning. If you’re applying the same day, just make sure you wait at least four hours before rinsing off in the shower and you will have a lovely, natural looking tan that lasts for at least three to four days!

Before: my legs, they glow. And not in the good way. In the "white girl coming out of winter hibernation" kind of way.
After: All tan and bronzed. In only 4 hours!

Let me know if you try this brand! It really is my favorite and what I recommend to everyone. Are there any other products you love for an at home tan?  Let me know in the comments below! I love to hear from y'all.
